Within the last fortnight, another 7 names were sold to domainers and business owners, with the combined value of these names approximately $27,000.

Coming in as a clear winner, eva.com.au took out the top sale for the fortnight. The domain was registered for a total of $12,149.45, representing nearly half of the money from all the names across the period. The domain, which functions as both an acronym and a personal name, has a particularly low volume of interest via Google trends. Despite this however, the name is likely to be attractive to companies who can add a personal touch of branding to their business name, or those looking for a more memorable and efficient name to capture and retain web traffic.

Next, the business oriented name yogalounge.com.au was acquired for $3,899.45. The area of yoga has become a rapidly increasing and popular sector, with numerous businesses and enthusiasts focusing on the practice. A name of this variety offers a strong and obvious connection to the discipline, while also adding a degree of branding. Accordingly, the name could be of significant benefit to a yoga studio operator.

The following name indicates that businesses still value alternative redirect names, particularly those which are shorter than the original. Silverline Australia has obtained the silverline.com.au domain, which now acts as a redirect to its existing name, silverlineaust.com.au. For the sum of $3,679.45, the domain provides a more memorable and associable reference to the business, which should help capture potential leads.

Property has also been a hot sector in the domain space for several years. Having secured the domain estateagents.com.au for $2,799.45, one of our regular domainers could turn this name into a lucrative investment by way of the various aggregator sites that may utilise a name like this, supported by strong underlying levels of interest.

We had two more acronyms make the list, courtesy of eph.com.au and woo.com.au. With both names being treated as domain investments, the registrants will be hoping they can find the ‘right’ buyer to extract a premium on the registration prices of $2,117.45 and $1,271.55 respectively.

Finally, we have a peculiar name to round out this report. With a price of $1,206.65, boob.com.au edged its way into the premium category. As one might predict, the name has strong levels of search interest in Google, as well as several industries where the name may be utilised – for example, medical surgery. The name has been purchased by another of our regular domainers, and currently links to sites with related terms.

In the last fortnight, these 6 names combined to add more than $27,000 to our running tally. Single word names and acronyms were by and large the major focal point, although a descriptive service name made the list as well.

With a prominent result, our highest selling domain was registered for just shy of $14,000. The name, Christmas.com.au, was picked up by one of our regular customers for the final sum of $13,859.95. Although search interest for the term is relatively low all year bar the lead up to the occasion itself, the name has some of the most positive attributes imaginable.

First of all, it is a single word, which also aligns with a very memorable event. Secondly, it caters to a wide range of end users across numerous different industries. Third, given the nature of the name, it is likely to capture a lot of interest from other searches involving additional terms (e.g. Christmas gifts). Finally, the target market which a name like this would be utilised towards is significant in value. Therefore, these reasons contribute to the formation of a notable price premium.

The next highest domain was valuer.com.au, which was picked up by the same client mentioned above for $6,159.95. Unlike the client’s first purchase, search traffic for the term valuer tends to diminish around Christmas time. Outside of that period however, general interest is fairly encouraging by way of strong levels. The name is most likely to have appeal to the real estate segment, however, as is the case with most high value names, they cater for alternative segments as well.

Two acronym names also featured among the top sellers. Ctp.com.au and d7.com.au were sold for $2,579.45 and $1,765.45 respectively. Each name was picked up by separate sole traders, emphasising that the names have a broad appeal beyond corporate use. It is likely these two domains were chosen for their short and memorable names, with the former of the two selling for a premium due to less ambiguity as there are no numbers in the name.

As we highlighted in the introduction, we also witnessed a descriptive service name sold as a premium domain. Divorcelawyerbrisbane.com.au was picked up by an existing client, Armstrong Services Pty Ltd, who has purchased numerous domains through Netfleet. Paying a total of $1,702.75, the name will join Armstrong’s domain portfolio, and will help promote its services to prospective clients for one of its secondary offices. If the website is SEO optimised, the domain will act as a great alternative for web traffic.

Finally, the same client who picked up the Christmas and valuer domains was back in action, also securing player.com.au. With a price point of $1,209.95, the domain represents a fairly low risk entry as an investment, particularly given the memorable nature and branding appeal that both serve as an upside on the name’s valuation.

These sales included a service keyword domain, an acronym, a descriptive business name, and a brandable domain. Keep reading to learn more about the domains in question.

Taking the honours in this edition of our sales report was financialplanners.com.au, which was acquired for a total fee of $8,385.25. Finance oriented names are quite popular among our client base, usually because of the appeal they hold to a range of high profile end users who are trying to edge each other out. This competitive aspect of their industry usually means they are open to aggressive marketing, and have a larger budget.

Therefore, a domain of this nature, with strong keywords that define a service, are incredibly powerful for SEO optimisation. What’s more, bar the Christmas holidays, search interest for the term is reasonably strong throughout the remainder of the year.

Our next name is a short three letter acronym, registered by Blue Sky Counselling and Therapy Pty Ltd. The domain in question is aby.com.au, with the registrant picking up the name for $1,831.45. Although it’s not yet immediately clear how the registrant will utilise this name, we’ve spoken previously about the versatility that acronyms provide in the marketplace.

The following domain was picked up by a company it appears is looking to align its operations under an overarching name. The Trustee for Global Pumps Trust, which operates the globalpumps.com.au website, registered globalgroup.com.au for the all-inclusive figure of $1,149.45. We imagine the domain is going to be used to incorporate other subsidiaries, which is one strategy that businesses often employ when they look to cross promote their complementary services, products or offers. Global Group will be an immediately recognisable name for customers, while also helping to align corporate branding.

We close out this week’s report with a name possessing strong brandable qualities. Vandal.com.au is not only short and memorable, but is associated with imagery and connotations. Further, the name isn’t necessarily restricted to a particular segment or industry, providing it with adaptability and added liquidity. Search interest for the term is usually subdued, however, coincidentally the name recorded one of its most prominent results a few weeks ago. The domain traded ownership for $1,149.45.

We’ve now surpassed $60,000 in sales since July 1st, with this figure not including the countless names sold for under $1,000 a piece. Let’s look at the latest additions.

A very specific domain leads recent sales from last week, as stumpgrinding.com.au was registered for a total of $2,359.45. Stump grinding refers to the practice of using a power tool to chip away at the stump of a tree in the ground so that it may be removed. While it is a very particular niche, this also means there is a distinct advantage to being a leader within the corresponding services field. As such, a descriptive keyword name that highlights and promotes what the website is about positions the end user ahead of its peers. Of course, some element of carefully executed SEO integration will be necessary.

Following closely behind was one of the better value domains we’ve featured for some time. An existing client picked up zero.com.au for the bargain price of $2,128.45. With a fairly stable level of demand, as well as considerable branding appeal, the name suits a large range of end users who could take advantage of it. Numerous industries ranging from finance to retail, as well as the likes of consumer bodies may find interest in a name of this nature which can be marketed strongly.

One potential concern is whether web users may misinterpret the name zero as the number. However, given the rarity of single number based domains, we don’t expect this to be a problem. On the resale market it would be a surprise if the name is not picked up quickly by another party for a higher price.

Just making the grade as premium domains were two descriptive keyword names picked up by the same domainer.

First, truckparts.com.au was acquired for $1,083.45. The domain is likely to attract interest from the automotive industry in the resale market. Given there are numerous players in this space who deal with parts, there may be sufficient volume to drive the market value of this domain higher than the registration cost. Interest would largely be propped up by consistently high level of Google search interest for the terms “truck parts”.

The other domain to just make the cut, and in the process complete this week’s report, was officesupplies.com.au. With a purchase price of $1,057.05, the name is another matching descriptive name with strong underlying search interest. It is worth noting however, the demand variability at the year’s end. Web interest slips around Christmas and New Year’s Eve before recovering strongly a week into the New Year.

Retailers are those most likely to express interest in this name as an end user. Smaller stores could leverage a name like this to better compete with larger, more established peers. On the other hand, these larger peers could further consolidate their position and move deeper into online retail as a channel for office supplies – an area that is still yet to mature.

In fact, since the beginning of the new financial year, premium domain sales have topped $54,000. If you were ever in need of a sign that the domain market is well and truly alive, this should reinforce the point.

Turning our attention back to the names from the last fortnight, and it was a financial domain which took out the honours. Perhaps spotting the opportunity with regards to the current tax ‘season’, LKN Accounting Group Pty Ltd snapped up onlinetaxreturn.com.au. The final price for the transaction was the notable figure of $11,049.45. With the corresponding website currently under development, it would appear the new registrant intends to offer an online tax platform combined with its tax return advisory services.

Financial services domains have long been valued at a premium due to the potential upside they offer through their broad exposure. In this case, the direct keyword search terms are becoming increasingly common via the growing prominence of online services for completing one’s tax returns. Predictably, this corresponds with a large surge in search traffic in mid-July each year. However, this means it could be some time again before the new registrant is able to fully capitalise on the value of their new domain.

Following in second place was the descriptive keyword domain structure.com.au. The name was registered by construction and fitout company Vertex Projects for $8,849.45. The search term appears to exhibit cyclical activity, with peaks aligning in March and May, and seasonal troughs over the Christmas holidays. Given the immediate relation between the acquiring registrant and the nature of the domain, it is conceivable they could leverage SEO to increase traffic to their site. The name is also fairly memorable due to its powerful visual association.

Another name with a high level of memorability is ioi.com.au, which was picked up for $1,787.45. As is the case with most acronym domains, ioi offers end users versatility. This means it is likely to draw interest from a wider range of businesses in the future should the new registrant have their mind set on flipping the name.

Finally, in what is one of the more unique names to appear on our premium domain sales list, we had a foreign word slide into fourth place. Francais.com.au was acquired by a sole trading entrepreneur for $1,149.45.While strictly speaking it is difficult to place a valuation on a foreign name in the Australian domain market, value will ultimately be derived from what an end user intends to use the name for. Therefore, while there could be a very small market oriented towards this name (e.g. French language schools, French cultural organisations), the niche could be one that prescribes a premium.

Descriptive keywords were the names of choice, but a couple of these also doubled up as powerful acronyms.

Emerging as a clear winner and standout name, iv.com.au was registered for a total of $11,599.45.Often used in its shorthand format for the longer term intravenous therapy, “iv” is a fairly stable search term with modest levels of interest over time. A name of this variety would have significant appeal to end users in the medical profession, but also offers companies in a variety of other sectors an incredibly dominant and memorable name.

Next up, one of our regular domainers has secured escapes.com.au. With a price tag of $3,515.55, we believe the name has a strong application in the travel industry – particularly for a website dealing with holiday packages. Not only does the phrase tie in with a colloquial term for a holiday, but the name has unforgettable branding potential. All in all, the domain could easily notch up a return when it comes back to the resale market.

Our third highest selling domain was net.com.au, which traded hands for $2,590.45. As another acronym name, “net” offers domainers and/or business owners’ considerable versatility. Search interest for the term has also been considerably high over the last five years, further building upon the fundamental value of the name.

We also had another short name offering good prospects in terms of branding. In this instance, the name was neat.com.au. Search interest for this term has been steadily building over time, with more volatile movements on a weekly basis. That said, in keeping with the theme shared by other names in this report, “neat” is easy to remember and could be used by multiple stakeholders. For the low price of $2,254.95 the domain offers a lot of investment upside.

Also well suited for the travel sector, luxehotels.com.au was acquired for $1,402.45. Although search interest for the term “luxe hotels” is still in its infancy, it’s one that is growing in popularity. The term is being used to market luxury accommodation, meaning its target market is one that would be looking to differentiate itself to win over high net worth customers. Given the nature of end users for such a domain, it would be quite conceivable that one or more users could be prepared to pay a premium to attain this name in the future.

Finally, our last name sold in the previous fortnight was shield.com.au. The new registrant, Cobra Car Alarms, is a company which works in the security appliances space. With its direct association to the nature of its products, “shield” could also be marketed strongly through creative branding. A short name with impact also helps fulfil imagery when heard, a great trait for a domain that cost only $1,209.95.

Nonetheless, 4 premium domain names were recently sold for above $1k. As always, we bring to you our thoughts and observations on these sales.

It was a three letter acronym which topped the leading sellers. The name was rmg.com.au, which was registered for a total price of $3,211.95. In what appears to be a very business savvy purchase, the name has been acquired by Regional Management Group. The company is “an organisation of engineers, project managers and business advisors offering a broad range of professional services, focusing on developing prosperity and capability of regional communities”.

In its current operations, the business has been using the lengthier domain, regionalmanagementgroup.com. Not only has this name been potentially inhibiting direct type-in web traffic, but you’ll also notice it’s not a localised domain either. As the business targets regional communities in Australia, it is likely the .com address has led to confusion among those who saw the company among Google search results. Now with two TLDs, and a more memorable domain name which still aligns with the business, Regional Management Group should be able to better target its key audience.

Our next highest selling domain is a name with considerable branding appeal. Secured for the final sum of $2,909.45, findatradie.com.au offers a unique mix of personality and functionality. On the one hand, the domain appeals and targets ‘tradies’, a colloquialism that’s become engrained in everyday Australian culture – and one that is as commonly used as the formal terms.

What’s more, the name targets this segment in an expansive way, with no geographical restriction and across the wider trade industry. Nevertheless, the domain indicates functionality through its search prospects, as indicated by the use of the word ‘find’. To an end user who intends to offer a search engine, or a listing site for advertisements, the name could represent value by way of its ability to generate passive income.

We have another three letter acronym in this edition of our sales report courtesy of tbf.com.au. As we’ve detailed previously, shorter acronyms offer a highly desirable level of versatility. Not only can they service end users who operate a company name that aligns with the letters, but they may also be used as a short hand abbreviation for common terms or euphuisms. Accordingly, with this versatility wrapped up in a memorable manner, the domain has enhanced liquidity and value – helping explain the price tag of $2,799.45. One purpose we could envisage a name like this being used for is a consumer advocacy and rights group, perhaps with a trading name like ‘To Be Fair’.

Last but not least is the descriptive service domain, travelcover.com.au. We had a sole trader pick up this name for $1,323.25 as a domain investment. Given our national obsession with travelling, as represented by the significantly high search interest for the term in local Google searches, a name like this would appeal to several insurance companies operating in the travel sector. Underpinned by likely demand from large scale end users, a descriptive nature, and consistent search interest, we expect it’s only a matter of time before someone comes knocking to make enquiries to acquire this name from our registrant.

Another federal budget has been brought to the table and we’re approaching the home straight for the financial year. Premium domain sales are still coming through thick and fast, with another 4 joining the tally over the last fortnight.

Kicking off this report, we were delighted to see a 2 letter domain take out top spot. The domain in question should come as a familiar sight to some, with the name cv.com.au sure to have been high up on the list of most desirable domains. What may come as a surprise however, is the relative affordability with which the name was registered. In total, the domainer who landed the name paid $8,097.05. Sure, it’s not a small sum, but it’s certainly at the upper end of the scale for value!

It goes without saying that a 2 letter name is just about as good as it gets for end users. An extremely short name, and in this instance one that is familiar to almost everyone for its abbreviation as an employment term – curriculum vitae. Because of this appeal, the name offers vast liquidity for domainers as an investment. The name is also somewhat ‘defensive’ in nature, whereby it attracts a stable level of search interest even in the midst of economic issues. In fact, during the GFC the domain’s search interest remained stable. In saying this, December does show signs of a slowdown as employers generally postpone recruitment at this time of year.

Our second highest selling domain from the last fortnight was also picked up by a domainer, suggesting investors are keeping an eye out for a bargain before tax time. On this occasion, the name is exclusivehomes.com.au, which was secured for a final price of $1,814.95. One of the important aspects of being a domainer is establishing a portfolio of names that have appeal to a broad range of end users. This domain would do so with developers, realtors, service providers to name a few. Furthermore, holding complementary names in your portfolio can sometimes amount to bundled transactions, but portfolio diversity is important.

Our third name is a geographically focused keyword service. The domain, melbourneaccountants.com.au, was registered by a family trust for $1,622.45. Google Trends search interest has, for the most part, been relatively subdued over the last 5 years. Predictably, the origin of this interest has come from Victoria. It is reasonable to assume that the end use of the name may be as a secondary redirect to a particular accounting business, thus targeting a second catchment of web traffic. Alternatively, it may be used for an aggregator website listing various accounting businesses across Melbourne. In the case of the latter, a direct match would be highly beneficial for a business of this nature.

Completing this sales report is a 3 letter acronym, iap.com.au. In what could be a great pickup for the registrant, a physio and psychology services business, the price of $1,303.45 represents good value for a domain of this sort. 3 letter names may usually fetch a higher price because of their qualities which support business growth, so we’ll keep an eye out on how the acquirer uses this one.

This time there were 4 registrations in the last week, including a couple acronyms among them.

The leading name for the week was localbusiness.com.au, which was secured for $5,549.45 by VIBP Pty Ltd. The multi faceted company operates in a variety of sectors supporting organisations with knowledge and expertise, and via media and publishing engagements. The company has secured the name in what appears to be a program management solution for the website localbusinessawards.com.au.

Currently the new domain is being redirected to the abovementioned awardsfocussed domain. Not only does this strategy preserve original web traffic, but it also targets a broader catchment. The extent of this broader catchment is also quite notable among search interest on the east coast of Australia. The two domains are also associated as related queries in Google, which means prospective visitors should have an easier time locating the website.

We have an acronym sliding into second place this week courtesy of qpi.com.au. For the total sum of $1,864.45, the domain was registered by marketing agency Prodigy Plus. Although not immediately clear, it’s likely the name has been purchased for a client either current, or prospective. The acronym itself is commonly used among IT and/or quality related applications, offering breadth among end users. QPI will also afford an end user a much more user friendly option for its visitors to visit the site via direct searches.

Our second acronym domain for the week was ern.com.au. The name was secured by nutritional food powder manufacturer, Nutradry. It’s not immediately clear whether the new domain will be affiliated or related to Nutradry in any way. However, with the versatility that acronym names provide, this is one of the major upsides that support the premium valuation given to these type of names. In this instance, while the premium is small the name went for $1,644.45 acronyms can appeal to particular users who end up paying a lot more than normal for a name that is ‘ideal’ for them.

Closing out this week’s report, our fourth premium domain to be officially tied up was diykitchens.com.au. The name was acquired for $1,424.45 by a sole trader currently operating the diyaustralia.com domain. A localized domain targeting a specific sector of the industry will not only attract a focussed catchment of web traffic, but it will add some sense of assurance by way of the .au handle. Earlier this year, the same registrant picked up diy.com.au, suggesting the holder is keen to establish an overarching portfolio of domains that connect to their business. All in all, this is a very astute strategy given the increased avenues for attracting business in what is a very competitive space.

The first part of the report detailed the other 4 names involved in the last fortnight of premium sales, with descriptive keywords featuring prominently.

Overall, as the fifth highest selling name from the last fortnight, btd.com.au features as the only three letter acronym on the list. Supported by a short, memorable and unique identifier, the name was exchanged for $2,964.45. Acronyms are known to fetch prices well in excess of this value, predominantly because of the broad based demand they attract from a range of clients. As such, they are often favoured by domainers who identify the opportunity to resell the name to a direct user for a premium.

In what was a rare transaction involving a 2 letter domain name, we were proud to be involved in the exchange of ro.com.au. Predictably, the name fetched an impressive price, but even then at $4,999.45 it would appear there may still be plenty of value left on the table. Something that the registrant appears to believe as they look to resell the name. Like acronym names, 2 letter domains are valued at a premium due to their short nature, which also lend themselves to use by mobile users.

One of our regular customers recently saw an opportunity to add to their existing domain portfolio, landing cleaning-services.com.au for $11,049.45. As a direct keyword for services, the name is likely to attract interest from end users operating cleaning businesses with scale. That is, a company with operations across multiple locations, or via franchises.

Google Trends illustrates what is, for the most part, consistent search interest apart from Christmas, when there is a notable decline.
